Trick-or-Treat Safely this Halloween Season with These Safety Tips

It’s October! The weather is cooling down quickly, the leaves are changing, and Halloween is right around the corner. We are now having daily discussions about costume ideas for ourselves or our kids and the grocery store aisles are filled with orange-and-black-wrapped candy. However, Halloween isn’t what it used to be. Gone are the days where kids could run freely door-to-door and get candy from every house in the neighborhood. Because of this ever-changing holiday tradition, we’ve come up with some suggestions to make sure your kids are still able to enjoy the day.

Attend a Local Event

Every year a new venue for Halloween activities pops up. Local malls and shopping centers often have days prior to Halloween where they host activities for kids including trick-or-treating. On October 9, families can attend the Belmar Boo, a free community event for kids aged ten and under. This event is held at 464 S. Teller St. here in Lakewood and begins at 11 a.m. While this event is the closest to home, there are many other events in the Denver area for you to check out.

Participate in a Trunk or Treat

As a safe community option, many churches and businesses host trunk or treats. These events typically take place in a large parking lot and everyone backs their vehicle into a circle. Each vehicle is responsible for their own decorations and handing out candy. Kids go from vehicle to vehicle saying “trick or treat” to collect candy. This is such a fun community option because you typically know the people you are trunk-or-treating with and your kids are able to stay close.

Practice Safe Trick-or-Treating

The best way to stay safe on Halloween is to plan in advance. While choosing a costume, make sure your child is able to walk easily and can be identified quickly. Then sit down and plan where you will trick-or-treat. Choose well-trafficked and lit neighborhoods and go out in groups, if possible. If you are trick-or-treating after dark, be sure to have reflective tape and carry flashlights.  And lastly, always check candy prior to allowing children to eat it.

Of course, if you want to avoid all the hassle of trick-or-treating, just buy candy for 50% off on November 1! We want everyone to have a safe and happy Halloween no matter which option they choose. And, if you’re looking for a new vehicle for trunk-or-treating or just need to haul around a bunch of candy and decorations, check out our selection of new Ford inventory.
